Paying More Where It Matters, Saving Where It Counts

Health-conscious construction and design isn’t about spending more. It is about spending with intention.

Let’s be honest — home construction and design already cost enough. Adding the price of premium, natural materials on top of everything else can feel daunting, especially when budgets are already stretched.

Many approaches to healthy home building are structured around fully custom, high-end projects where cost efficiency is not the primary constraint, or around consulting-only models that offer guidance without involvement in procurement or execution. In both cases, healthier materials are often positioned as premium upgrades, without clear systems in place to help offset their cost.

At Interra, we offer a fully integrated approach — from design and material sourcing through project completion. Clients work with one team that manages the entire process, allowing us to guide investments where they matter most: prioritizing materials that directly affect human health and environmental exposure, while reducing costs where excess, novelty, or disposability offer little long-term value.

We know that not every element of a home carries the same impact. When every finish, system, and furnishing is treated as an equal priority, budgets inflate and meaningful decision-making is lost. Some decisions shape indoor air quality, nervous system regulation, and lifetime exposure. Others are largely aesthetic and can be sourced intelligently without paying a premium.

Invest in the Materials That Shape Health

Certain elements of a home are in constant interaction with the body. Walls, insulation, lighting, and finishes are not passive backdrops — they influence air quality, light exposure, chemical load, and how a space feels to live in over time.

Because these materials directly shape daily exposure, comfort, and long-term health, they are where investment matters most.

This is where we encourage clients to spend more:

  • Mineral paints and plasters that are breathable, vapor permeable, and free of plastic binders, allowing walls to naturally regulate moisture and support healthier indoor air.

  • Natural insulation systems, such as wool, that help regulate temperature and humidity while supporting balanced indoor air quality without synthetic fibers or chemical treatments.

  • Lighting that supports circadian rhythm, including full-spectrum and incandescent options that better mimic natural light and support the body’s natural biological cycles.

  • Durable, low-toxicity finishes that age naturally and do not off-gas over time, avoiding the synthetic resins and sealants commonly used in conventional construction.

  • Natural flooring systems, including solid wood, natural stone, and 100% wool carpets that contain no synthetic chemicals, plastics, or PFAS, installed with healthier underlayments such as natural rubber or wool instead of conventional synthetic foam padding.

These materials often cost more upfront, but they are foundational. They cannot be swapped out easily later, and they determine how healthy a home truly is once construction ends.

Partner Pricing on Premium Healthy Materials

Many of the materials we specialize in—wool insulation, natural plasters, mineral paints, and specialized lighting systems—are not commonly used in standard construction and require specific knowledge to install correctly. These products behave differently than conventional materials, and improper installation can compromise both performance and longevity.

Because we work with these materials regularly, we are experienced and certified installers and have built long-standing relationships with trusted manufacturers and suppliers. This allows us to specify the right products for each application, install them properly, and extend trade pricing and partner discounts directly to our clients.

Through these partnerships, clients gain access to reduced pricing on premium healthy materials, making it more feasible to invest in non-toxic, high-performance building solutions that support long-term wellness without sacrificing durability or integrity.

It Doesn’t Have to be ‘New’ to be Nice

The modern furnishing industry is built on rapid turnover, synthetic materials, and constant replacement. This creates enormous environmental waste while often delivering lower quality products at premium prices.

Instead, we help clients look to what already exists.

Vintage and secondhand furnishings often outperform new pieces in both quality and longevity. Solid wood construction, dovetail joinery, and hand-finished details are far more common in older furnishings than in many contemporary equivalents. These pieces were built to last generations, not design cycles.

Choosing vintage is not about compromise. It is about discernment.

Sourcing Materials Already in Circulation

Beyond furnishings, we apply the same philosophy to architectural materials whenever possible.

We actively source natural stone, granite, and tile from project excess, salvaged inventory, and surplus materials from other builds. These materials are often of exceptional quality, already extracted, cut, and finished — yet at risk of being discarded due to overordering, design changes, or project closeouts.

By redirecting these materials into new homes, we reduce the demand for fresh extraction while preserving the integrity and performance of natural finishes. This approach lowers environmental burden, minimizes waste, and allows clients to access premium materials without the inflated cost typically associated with custom stone and tile.

Sourcing Without the Markup

We work with wholesale suppliers and sourcing partners worldwide to help clients access high-quality furnishings without retail markup. This allows us to find exceptional pieces — often at a fraction of the cost of new, mass-market materials — while maintaining aesthetic integrity and material honesty.

By sourcing this way, clients can significantly offset the cost of healthier building materials without sacrificing design quality or longevity.

Healthy Building Should Be Accessible

We believe that building healthy homes should not be reserved for a narrow income bracket.

At Interra, it is our mission to help people make healthier building and design decisions in a way that is realistic and achievable within their budget.

Thoughtful prioritization, strategic sourcing, and experienced guidance allow us to reduce unnecessary costs while still investing in the materials and systems that matter most for long-term health.

You don’t have to spend more— you just have to spend better.
